Building Extensions - Things to Consider

Adding Value

Whether you are looking to stay in your home for quite a while or want to sell in a couple of year’s time, a building extension will add value to your home.

To carry out an extension to your home is often more economical than moving and purchasing a new home.

Outwards or Upwards

To extend outwards maybe perceived as less expensive than upwards but this depends on the size of the project, building materials used, drainage etc. It may mean compromising the garden and exterior living space. Extending upwards can also bring more light into the home but more structural issues have to be considered such as load bearing of floors etc.

We will be happy to offer our advice at this early stage of designing your building extension.

Design and Planning

Try to keep focussed on the look and feel of your home during the design stage. It is safer to use similar materials when building a new extension which will closely match or blend with the existing property. However for the more adventurous, building an extension also offers to make a statement of the lifestyle you want, i.e. the dramatic use of glass for example. However be prepared as the more radical the effect the more likely protracted planning process could become.  Keep your neighbours well informed and involved at the initial stage which could save delays later.

Contact our specialist at the earliest opportunity as they can offer guidance on what type of building extension will require planning permission i.e. any part of the proposed extension is over four metres high and within two metres of your property boundaries. Our team will be able to advise and guide you through this process.

Building regulations

Most building extensions have to comply with building regulations. All building work in England and Wales will comply with the minimum standards set. We can help you ensure that your extension meets all the building regulations which cover design and construction, health and safety and environmental protection.

Our Pledge

Our estimate will covers building materials and we are happy to provide references and testimonials on request. Our contract for your building extension will include a timetable with a target completion date, subject to weather conditions and availability of certain materials.

An outline of how we manage a project can be viewed on the way we work page which is based on a typical loft conversion or small building extension.
